“Everything is light, light, light,” Diane von Furstenberg declared, making her way over to a rack where she pulled out a ruched and printed mesh dress for inspection. “You could roll it up in your suitcase,” she went on, “and it would come out without wrinkles.”

Von Furstenberg launched her business four decades ago with the tagline, “Be a woman, wear a dress.”
