Carly Cushnie definitely shined solo in this masterful collection of denim reimagined & sleek shimmering fabrics. The vivid colours and rich textures danced in unison with clever silhouettes. Cushnie reinvented structured denim into the most innovative and stylish looks on the runway. The swimwear was fresh + complimentary to the line. Bronze colour fabrics we the perfect hue of rich copper. Cushnie has definitely mastered the art of the pantsuit as well as designing for all shapes and sizes. We love the diversity in models + body types that graced the unique Cushnie runway. Bravo! 5-Stars!

Moments before her Spring 2019 show, Carly Cushnie was experiencing all the feels backstage. The designer was nervous, excited, anxious, and elated at the thought of presenting her first collection under the newly rebranded Cushnie label. Michelle Ochs, her partner in Cushnie et Ochs, departed the company back in February, less than a week after celebrating their 10-year anniversary. In addition to her solo debut today, Cushnie has also recently announced the launch of a bridal line, a new aesthetic for the handbags, and a collaboration with Lee Body Optix. “It’s a lot, I know!” she exclaimed. Then she took a breath and started to explain her inspiration for Spring. Cushnie was instantly calmed as she spoke lovingly about how her references this season came from her family and her Caribbean roots. The clothes, with their electric colors and touches of raffia and beading, were meant to evoke the spirit of reggae and island life.
Models of all shapes, sizes, and races wore their hair slicked back and had giant hoops dangling from their ears (Sade was Cushnie’s beauty muse this season). A strapless jade dress came decorated with woven, crystal-embellished mesh, mimicking a traditional market bag. The red and pink mixed print separates would look right in the middle of a dance hall, as would the palm-printed and beaded jumpsuit. Overall, Cushnie used her inspiration well, without being too literal, and if the suiting wasn’t exactly reminiscent of the Caribbean, it was appealing nonetheless.
The offering today was filled with passion and self-expression from a talented designer who for so long shared the spotlight with another person. Not that it was a bad thing: Cushnie et Ochs was a respected, successful business and the women remain friends. However in fashion, unless you are Dolce and Gabbana or a handful of other design duos that still remain at each other’s sides, it can be difficult for two separate visions to stay on the same course. Eventually, they may have to set themselves free in order to really shine. In Cushnie’s case, she’s already flying high.
