FashionWeek.Pro’s favorite sustainable fashion luxury brand Elvis & Kresse from Tonge, Kent in the UK was recently awarded the ‘Best For The World 2018’ honour. We had the exclusive opportunity to get a few additional questions answered by Kresse Wesling MBE, Elvis & Kresse Co-Founder, along with the recent press release enclosed below.

Since Burberry’s September 2018 announcement that it would no longer incinerate or destroy unsaleable stock in the future, I contacted Elvis & Kresse with a couple of specific questions in regards to their partnership with the Burberry Foundation and how it may impact future joint product development strategies.

Repurposed + recycled signature Burberry plaid in stunning Elvis & Kresse sustainable fashion creations – a possibility in the future? Read Mr. Wesling’s answers below – a FashionWeek.Pro exclusive.

LM: Given that Elvis & Kresse is THE expert in refurbishing fine leathers, silks and fire-hoses, will the Burberry Foundation partnership transition into a more unique product strategy? Burberry has fervently and fiercely defended the Burberry tartan plaid print for decades – now that the famous plaid will no longer be incinerated or destroyed, how will that impact future Elvis & Kresse designs? Are there any announcements on the horizon specifically in regards to the signature Burberry tartan plaid?

Kresse Wesling MBEElvis & Kresse have been pioneering rescue and transformation for over 13 years with a host of incredibly difficult materials and this is the kind of challenge we love. We don’t work with Burberry on post-production pieces, yet – but it is something we are exploring.

LM:  Has Elvis & Kresse ever considered opening a US-based factory?

Kresse Wesling MBEWe have definitely considered developing regional workshops in order to expand. As we grow it will make sense to localise production where we have a ready supply of materials and also a lot of people who love our work and ethos. North America would be a great place to start!

FashionWeek.Pro was thrilled with these answers – if anyone can tackle these two challenges it’s Elvis & Kresse. Looking forward to more exciting news from this amazing team who are pioneering sustainability in the fashion industry. Bravo!

Elvis & Kress Press Release: An Interview with Burberry – Kresse Wesling of Elvis & Kresse

In the past year, Burberry has created a unique partnership with sustainable luxury company Elvis & Kresse to transform at least 120 tonnes of leather offcuts from the production of Burberry products into a range of accessories and homeware.

By demonstrating what can be achieved when leather waste is revalued and created into entirely new products, Elvis & Kresse and the Burberry Foundation aim to affect real change in the supply chain of the leather goods industry. Where leather waste is usually destroyed, the partnership with Elvis & Kresse is disrupting traditional approaches and revealing new solutions.

Read more about this innovative approach in an interview with Kresse Wesling MBE, Co-Founder of Elvis & Kresse.

How did your relationship with Burberry begin?

Kresse: Burberry first approached us in 2014. They were closing out an existing five-year social and environmental plan while planning their next ambitious five-year programme. They were impressed by our commitment to materials rescue and charitable donations and we started to discuss how we might collaborate. As you can imagine it took quite a while to develop a plan capable of saving significant material and worthy of both our businesses. When Burberry launched their new agenda in the fall of 2017 our project was a key component of their vision and we are now implementing and evolving this plan.

What does your partnership with the Burberry Foundation involve?

KresseWe have partnered with Burberry Foundation to solve our most ambitious material challenge to date: the vast amounts of waste created through the production of leather goods. It is estimated that each year, 800,000 tonnes of leather waste is produced by the global leather industry. Through this partnership, we will demonstrate how the traditional leather goods supply chain can be disrupted and changed for the better. We will also transform at least 120 tonnes of leather offcuts from the production of Burberry products into accessories and homeware. Half of the profits from this range will be donated to charitable causes focused on renewable energy. The remaining half will be reinvested to expand our work in reducing and reusing waste, protecting the environment and inspiring craftspeople.

Tell us about the process behind turning Burberry’s leather off-cuts into brand new products.

KresseNo matter how carefully patterns for leather goods are planned, high quality, unused, freshly tanned and dyed leather falls to the cutting room floor as seemingly unusable pieces. Our system transforms leather fragments from the production of Burberry leather goods into components. The first step is to coordinate with Burberry production to ensure the smooth collection of offcuts. When they arrive at our site in Kent we sort them into size and colour. We typically only start the cutting process when we know which item we will make, ensuring that we don’t over-cut any particular shape. We then plan our cuts carefully, ensuring that we produce as little of our own offcuts as possible. Each component of our system is then individually cut before it is hand woven, piece by piece, into whatever it is we need. This could be anything from a panel for a bag, a large rug or tapestry, upholstery or works of art.

Elvis & Kresse captures the imagination of people around the world, and you’ve sometimes had some unusual requests for bespoke products. Tell us about the most unusual project you’ve completed for a client.

Kresse: We designed and built an entirely circular kitchen using only reclaimed pallets and scaffolding wood. It consists of hundreds of pieces, with no two the same, and had to be built twice. We first built it in our workshop to make sure it was perfect, then we numbered each piece before taking it apart and then rebuilding it in its forever home. It is the most beautiful and yet utilitarian jigsaw-like installation; to us it feels like a genuine cross between a kitchen and a piece of art.

What are some of the other raw materials that you transform?

KresseLondon’s hoses will always be our first love, but we rescue more than 10 materials on a regular basis and have created unique products with all of them. We work with failed parachute panels and auction banners for our lining materials and dust covers. We collect Yorkshire Tea Sacks, transforming them into our brochures, leaflets and mailing envelopes. Additional packaging and labelling is made from second hand shoe boxes and coffee sacks. As range staples we also reclaim printing blankets, split scaffolding wood, and leather offcuts. Finally, we always enjoy welcoming people to our home and workshop in Kent, Tonge Mill. We began a restoration adventure here in 2013 working the same way that we make our products, with rescued or reclaimed materials. It is a difficult and slow way to renovate, but it is the only way to create a truly luxurious, bespoke result that doesn’t compromise our environmental values.

Is there any other material that you would really like to work with?

KresseUnfortunately, we live in wasteful times. This means the list of materials we would like to rescue is incredibly long and represents millions of tonnes of valuable material. We know that our particular style of alchemy is a powerful solution for all kinds of materials but we have to focus. Right now, we are committed to solving the leather issue.

Elvis & Kresse are a pioneering and award-winning sustainable luxury brand based in England. Most famously known for their handmade luxury items made from decommissioned fire-hose and recently making waves in the news over their 5-year partnership with The Burberry Foundation. Although this partnership was officially announced already late last year, it was only brought to light after Burberry announced in September that it will stop the practice of destroying unsold goods. This 5-year partnership will seek to save a further 120 tons of leather waste from incineration.

LIVARI is a collaborative expression of art and activism by Alysia Reiner, Claudine DeSola (Caravan Stylist Studio) & Tabitha St. Bernard-Jacobs (Tabii Just, Women’s March). Using the art of fashion as a medium of activism and hope, LIVARI is a collaborative space where the voices of women are celebrated and uplifted.

It was the shared values and ambitions between LIVARI and Elvis & Kresse that made this collaboration a true meeting of hearts and minds.

The handmade-to-order piece celebrates a unique combination of rescued materials. Black leather off-cuts from the production of Burberry leather goods and reclaimed printing blankets are combined to create a stunning black-on-black exterior with a fun apt hot-orange lining made from failed parachute silk panels.

Alysia Reiner selected the colours, material combination and designed the black-on-black pattern of the clutch. 50% of the profits from each Limited Edition Clutch will be donated to Barefoot College, supporting the education of female solar engineers and the renewable electrification of their communities.

LIVARI’s motto “JOY is an act of RESISTANCE” is delicately etched into one of the leather pieces, handwoven into the clutch. A message any woman will want to carry proudly, from day to night.

– Elvis & Kresse x LIVARI Clutch Bag Designed with Alysia Reiner – Sustainable Luxury – Elvis & Kresse – $160.00

Not only does this edgy yet ethical luxury collaboration demonstrate the beauty that can found from materials otherwise going to landfill, but also acts as a shining beacon of what the fashion industry should strive for. The future of luxury is sustainable, where green is most definitely the new black.

Alysia Reiner on her collaboration: “We are so excited to be collaborating with Elvis & Kresse on the LIVARI clutch. E&K deeply espouses LIVARI’s commitment to environmental fashion activism and our clutch is a perfect example of both reusing/repurposing materials and giving 50% to a non-profit empowering woman. I interwove two different textures of black leather to create a unique depth for the exterior, a clutch that would transcend any seasons or trends. A versatile, timeless accessory that would go with everything, but would still have a fresh look and unique style. May the woven pattern also be a metaphor for the interconnectedness of all women supporting each other in the daily fabric of our lives.”

The Limited Edition Elvis & Kresse x LIVARI clutch made its debut during New York Fashion Week at the Tome New York Show. It can be exclusively purchased through the Elvis & Kresse e-boutique with a waiting list in place already of approximately 3 weeks.

LIVARI

LIVARI is co-founded by Alysia Reiner (Orange Is The New Black, Equity), Claudine DeSola (Caravan Stylist Studio) & Tabitha St. Bernard-Jacobs (Tabii Just, Women’s March).

“I believe Elvis & Kresse craft some of the most beautiful bags in the world with so much attention to detail. Beyond that I love their story, their ethics, and their community. We are ecstatic to have been introduced to Barefoot College through our work with them.” – Claudine DeSola, celebrity stylist and Co-founder of LIVARIWomen’s

“At LIVARI, we always aim to reduce waste in the work we do. By using excess Burberry leather, Elvis & Kresse lowers their environmental impact, while creating accessories that are truly works of art. It was a true delight to partner with them on the clutch and see our visions align.” – Tabitha St. Bernard-Jacobs, Women’s March and Co-founder of LIVARI

Elvis & Kresse and Burberry

Elvis & Kresse was launched to solve the problem of London’s decommissioned fire hose. When the hose was too damaged to repair, it was simply going to landfill. Since 2005 they have been collecting all of London’s hoses, transforming them into high quality, hand-crafted lifestyle accessories. They donate 50% of the profits from this collection to the Fire Fighters Charity.

Elvis & Kresse have also turned their attention to tackling the waste created in the production of leather goods and will expand this work with a grant from the Burberry Foundation.

Elvis & Kresse are a certified Benefit Corporation (B Corp).

The Burberry Foundation

The Burberry Foundation was set up in 2008 by Burberry Group plc as an independent charity (UK registered charity number 1154468) for general charitable purposes and grant-making. The Foundation Board comprises two Burberry representatives as well as an independent trustee. The Board meets four times a year and is responsible for upholding the Foundation’s vision and ensuring delivery of its charitable purpose.

The Foundation is dedicated to using the power of creativity to drive positive change in our communities, and build a sustainable future through innovation. The Foundation is taking a long-term approach focusing its grant-making on reducing waste, promoting the STEAM agenda (integrating art into the traditional science, technology, engineering, and maths agenda), tackling educational inequality and supporting social and economic development.

About Burberry Group’s Responsibility Agenda

Burberry’s Responsibility agenda is designed to drive positive change and build a more sustainable future through innovation. Our new five-year programme “Creating Tomorrow’s Heritage” focuses on three ambitious goals:

Support 1 million people in the communities that sustain Burberry’s business and the wider luxury industry

Ensure 100% of Burberry’s products have at least one element that drives positive change

Invent new approaches to revaluing waste created in the production of luxury goods, whilst becoming carbon neutral in its own operations.

Everyone engages with a clutch in a slightly different way, but we wanted to make this practical shape work for everyone. The strap can be removed, attached at both ends, or looped onto one of the side hooks. We have counted 5 ways of carrying this so far and leave the rest to your imagination. You can choose the length of strap: the Standard classic length strap, the over-the-shoulder adjustable long strap, or the ultimate in flexibility – Both straps!

Our Fire & Hide Clutches are also available in several classic colours, but if you have been inspired by our collaboration with LIVARI, why not join one of our workshops and choose your own colours and pattern?

THE FIRE & HIDE COLLECTION

In 2005 we fell in love with London’s decommissioned fire-hose. Determined to save it from landfill we took this lifesaving material home, gave it a second chance, and vowed to donate 50% of the profits to the Fire Fighters Charity. But fire-hose was just the beginning.

Every year, 800,000 tonnes of leather ends up on the cutting room floor. Our leather partners cherish their hides, but no matter how carefully they cut their patterns, there will always be small seemingly unusable offcuts. To rescue this leather we developed a unique modular approach. We hand weave these fragments into whole new hides then lovingly recraft them into sustainable luxury bags and accessories. Our commitment to rescuing British fire-hoses remains the same, the trim, handles and internal detailing of the Fire & Hide range are all made from genuine decommissioned fire-hose. And we continue to donate 50% of profits to charity.

Our Fire & Hide Collection represents a whole new kind of luxury. One that is sustainable, ethical, transparent, generous and kind.
