Fashion Brands Doing More Than Fashion During The COVID-19 Pandemic

By: Kristi Yang

In the past few weeks, change has been no stranger to us. We are going to school and work without having to go to school or work, grocery shopping with gloves on has become the latest spring trend, and the world is running out of toilet paper? Our new normal has been everything but that. However, despite this departure from the norm, it has inspired brands, companies, organizations — as well as individuals — from all sorts of industries to think and act more creatively, and fashion is no different.

Though many stores and factories have closed — both voluntarily and by government mandate — in the past few weeks in order to limit the spread of the new coronavirus, some of those that remain are pivoting from making dresses to making protective clothing. PPE — personal protective equipment — has been scarce, and for people, especially those in the healthcare industry, this could put them in harm’s way. Responding to this lack, particularly of face masks, many of those in the fashion industry are using their resources to help those who need to be helped during this time.

CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund – A COMMON THREAD

View this post on Instagram

⁣The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund (CVFF) was launched in 2003 in response to the 9/11 tragedy and how the crisis especially impacted emerging talent. Today, as we face another crisis that is challenging the entire fashion and retail business, Vogue’s Anna Wintour and Tom Ford, as CFDA’s Chairman, decided to repurpose the 2020 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund into a fundraiser to aid fashion businesses most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.⠀ ⠀ Today marks the launch of CVFF’s “A Common Thread” fundraising and storytelling initiative spearheaded by Vogue and in collaboration with the CFDA. The goal is to raise both awareness and needed funds for those in the American fashion community who have been impacted by COVID-19.⠀ ⠀ Donors can support the fund by texting THREAD to 44-321.⠀ ⠀ Applications for funding will be available on CFDA.com from Wednesday, April 8th. #cvffacommonthread

Back in the states, CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund started a storytelling initiative through Condé Nast channels. Originally created in response to the 9/11 tragedy, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund is reinventing itself to raise funds and awareness for the American fashion community impacted by the pandemic. The storytelling element of this initiative will bring to light stories of designers across the nation using their skills and resources to work and combat this coronavirus.

Ralph Lauren

The company donated $10 million towards fighting the pandemic, $1 million of which will go to A Common Thread.

Tom Ford

10% of all online sales will go to A Common Thread; the brand is also incentivizing shoppers by offering free virtual styling appointments and consultations.

Christian Siriano

Action was taking place on the other side of the country too. On March 21, Christian Siriano tweeted New York Governor Andrew Cuomo if they needed masks (and they did), so he reassigned his 10 seamstresses and made 1,000 masks in just three days. By March 28, they packed and were ready to donate 1,500 masks.

LVMH and Inditex

Inspired by the luxury corporation LVMH Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton manufacturing hand sanitizer at their French cosmetics and perfume factories, Inditex, the world’s largest fashion group and owner of Zara, pioneered this movement by initially distributing 10,000 masks from Chinese manufacturers across Spain. They are in the works of donating two million masks and making hospital gowns in their textile factories.

European Fashion Houses

Following suit, more and more brands are helping fight the pandemic and doing much to ameliorate protection against the virus. European luxury brands are using their capital to combat the coronavirus crisis:

Armani

The luxury fashion house is switching its operations to make hospital gowns. CEO and founder Giorgio Armani gave €1.25 million ($1.4 million) to hospitals and institutions across Italy.

Bulgari

The jewelry house donated to aid research at the Spallanzani Hospital in Rome, which allowed them to buy a microscopic image acquisition system (€100,000/$112,856).

Burberry

The luxury fashion company is moving from making trench coats to masks and gowns, delivering over 100,000 masks to the U.K.’s National Health Service (NHS), and helping aid funding for vaccine research.

Chanel

The high luxury fashion company is making masks and gowns and promised to directly pay its employees in France for the next seven weeks, as opposed to relying on the country’s emergency unemployment funds.

Dolce & Gabbana

The luxury fashion house will be donating to support research at the Humanitas University in Italy.

Hermès

The high fashion luxury goods company says they will donate ¥5 million ($711,278) to the China Soong China Ling Foundation, which honors medical professionals on the front line.

Kering

The luxury group — which includes brands like Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, and Saint Laurent — donated ¥7.5 million ($1 million) to The Red Cross Society of China for medical supplies.

LVMH

In addition to making hand sanitizer, the group has donated ¥16 million ($2.2 million) to The Red Cross Society of China to help with medical supply shortages.

Moncler

The luxury skiwear brand has donated €10 million ($10.9 million) towards the construction of new hospitals, with over 400 intensive care units, in Milan.

Prada

Co-CEOs Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli and chairman Carlo Mazzi donated two resuscitation and complete intensive care units (ICU) to each hospital in Milan.

Richemont

The luxury goods holding company, that includes brands such as Cartier, Chloé, Montblanc, Piaget, and Van Cleef & Arpels, says they will donate ¥10 million ($1.4 million) to combat the novel coronavirus.

Versace

“We are going through something none of us has ever experienced. Despite all the uncertainty and the fear, we have shown the world that we are a strong community, that we stand together, and that we have helped each other in such an amazing, generous way. I have never been more proud of being Italian and I feel it was not just an honor, but my duty to do my part and support in any way I could.” Donatella Versace Versace is donating $500,000 to support local relief efforts in response to the pandemic. The funds will support the Intensive Care Unit of San Raffaele Hospital in Milan to provide critical aid to those battling the virus, and Camera Nazionale Della Moda Italiana for the “Italia, we are with you” project, an initiative that donates ventilators and medical equipment to Italy’s hospitals. This is in addition to the ¥1 million that Versace donated in February to support the Chinese Red Cross Foundation, and the personal contributions made by Donatella Versace and Allegra Versace Beck. #StaySafe #StayHome

The luxury fashion company is now making hospital gowns in their factories. The company also donated ¥1 million ($143,748) to The Red Cross Society of China to aid with the nation’s medical supply shortages. Chief creative officer Donatella Versace and her daughter donated €200,000 to the ICU in San Raffaele Hospital in Milan.

Los Angeles Apparel

In the following days, Los Angeles Apparel, Christian Siriano, and Karla Colletto took action too. By March 14, Los Angeles Apparel was ready to sell its FACEMASK3 – 3-Pack Cotton Mask ($30), developed, made, and tested by its owner workers for industrial use. Dov Charney, the company’s founder and the former head of American Apparel, stated that he hopes to produce 300,000 masks and 50,000 gowns per week in his 150,000-square-foot factory. Aside from making new PPE, on March 31, the brand took on a sustainable and much-needed endeavor of repairing the straps on expired N95 masks, donated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and donating them to Los Angeles hospitals.

Karla Colletto

However, this mask effort is not just happening in urban hotspots. Despite closing its factory in Virginia, on March 24 swimwear company Karla Colletto announced that it would be reopening their manufacturing facility to produce PPE for the heroes fighting COVID-19.

Elaine Gold Launch Pad

Created in collaboration with the CFDA/Accessories Council, this program pledged to donate $250,000 to A Common Thread, as well as matching an additional $250,000 if someone donates.

Here at FashionWeek.Pro

From 10-person teams to 100-person teams, companies of all different sizes are doing what they can to help combat the pandemic. Here at FashionWeek.Pro, we’re no different. Our team is trying to make around 15 masks per day and send them to wherever they are needed. Small scale operations like these can make an impact too, particularly within local communities. If you can do anything to help, whether that be replacing broken bands on masks, making masks at home, or supporting the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, these simple acts can make a difference for those in need. Read more here, if you need information on how you can donate masks, and contact your local hospitals or health departments on specific areas in need of masks.

And if you don’t have a sewing machine at home but still want to help medical professionals get the PPE they need, donate to Thrive Global’s First Responders First initiative, or if you want to help in New York City specifically, donate to NYC Mayor’s Fund.

And with that—stay safe, stay healthy, and stay at home.

CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund’s Americans in Paris

If you’re at all associated or interested in American fashion you are probably familiar with the CFDA and the Vogue Fashion Fund. If you aren’t, the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund was established in 2003 to help emerging American design talent find continued success in the business of fashion and can be easily described as the realistic business version of Bravo’s Project Runway. Started in 2003, the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund has helped emerging fashion design talent grow and thrive by granting the winner not only a sizable cash prize ($400k) – but more importantly, guidance from some of the industry’s leading professionals. Since its inception, the fund has granted $6.6 million dollars to 45 companies including now well-known designers such as Alexander Wang, Thom Browne, 3.1 Phillip Lim and many more.

Being the 15th year of the CVFF, that meant double the talent from the previous year, and the list of finalists excited both industry professionals and fashion fans alike. One of the many cool aspects of being a finalist in the annual Fund’s competition is the ‘Americans in Paris’ showroom presentation. According to a press statement, the Americans in Paris event “provides invaluable global exposure for designers as well as sales, marketing and media support necessary to expand their respective businesses.”

“Paris is an important stop on the global fashion week circuit, and with Americans in Paris, we are helping the designers meet the buyers and editors whom they might not have otherwise met,” explained Steven Kolb, President & Chief Executive Officer of the CFDA.

The PFW FashionWeek.Pro team was able to preview all nine finalists – including the Christian Cowan SS20 collection – first-hand.

Christian Cowan Collection Review By: Emily Michaels / @high_priestess_of_fashion
Jr. NYC Fashion Editor-At-Large, FashionWeek.Pro

It’s hard to talk fashion and pop music without mentioning young fashion designer and marketing phenome Christian Cowan. Since his first show in 2017, he has blown up into a brand that dresses every pop diva on the scene from Lady Gaga to Lil Nas X. In addition to his vast celebrity Rolodex, he’s also already collaborated with some pretty impressive companies. From his insane watch shoe collaboration with esteemed shoe brand Giuseppe Zanotti to his sold-out capsule collection with ASOS to working with the FREAKING Powder Puff Girls, he’s already made a name for himself in the industry. The CFDA couldn’t have ignored him if they tried. From his signature black and white checkered separates to his pastel ombré dyed jacket and pant set to his show-stopping rose gold sequin bow dress, there is a little something for everyone (who’s famous) here. Knowing his celeb clients need something to get caught in by paparazzi, to perform in on tour and to wear when hitting the press junket, he’s created a variety of looks that have them covered.

LUAR Collection Review by Emily Michaels – FashionWeek.Pro

Are you a girl who has a poster of Cam’ron in his pink faux fur look from 2002 on her wall? Is Missy Elliot your most listed to artist on Spotify? Are you obsessed with Dapper Dan? If you answered yes to any of these questions you are probably already a fan of LUAR. The designer behind the brand, Raul, and yes LUAR is his name spelled backward, is a color-blind historian of hip hop ghetto girl fashion who lives by the adage the shinier the hoops the hotter the chic. With a color palette that contrasts so nicely with the wild, new and exciting drapes and silhouettes he brings to life on the runway, the brand is wearable bougie at its finest. While many designers just create clothes, Raul creates a story for his girl. She’s at the office, she’s meeting her man, she’s getting her nails done, etcetera.

He’s an expert in styling her and pimping her out with insane bejeweled sunglasses, embroidered flippy highlighted bangs and covetable fur & leather handbags. In terms of the garments themselves, what really makes LUAR stand out is the way designer Raul uses fabrics. Instead of letting the fabric tell him what to do or what to make, he forces the fabrics to submit to his wishes, a choice that would work for very few designers. From his so-heavyweight-they-stand-up-on-their-own denim pant and jacket set to his insane fur coats complete with fur monogram, to his articulately draped neutral pinstriped suiting pieces, he has brought jenny from the block to the board room and beyond.

Designer Bio via The Webster –

Rebecca De Ravenel

In 2015, Rebecca de Ravenel fused her passion for design and unique jewelry to start her own line. Having spent her childhood between the Bahamas and Paris, de Ravenel has worked in interior design and fashion for years, building up inspiration for her year-round resort collections. Her inspiration comes from a mix of tropical vibrancy and urban sophistication which informed her famous, outfit-making Les Bons Bons earrings. Later jewelry collections feature polished dropped seashell earrings and accessories.

In 2017, the designer launched her first ready-to-wear collection of airy, feminine dresses and separates, earning a her slot as a finalist for the 2018 CFDA Fashion Fund. The breezy frocks draws influence from the South of France and is reflective of how modern women prefer to dress: easy and comfortable yet refined. Most importantly, the clothes de Ravenel create are intended to complement her statement jewelry.

Exploration. Caution. Resourcefulness. Craft. These were the main takeaways from the dozen collections presented by students in the MFA Fashion Design and Society program at Parsons School of Design. They’re an impressive bunch; most describe themselves in their biographies not just as designers but also as artists and entertainers. The majority came from far-away places including China, Australia, and Pakistan to study in New York. They’re immigrants who are stirring their own traditions into the city’s melting pot, a point which seemed to be underlined by the closing music, a live recording of the “Star-Spangled Banner” mixed with “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix.

Is the American dream in tatters? That depends on whom you speak to, but the clothes on the runway today certainly were. These are challenging times, and that was reflected in the students’ work, much of which was deconstructed, twisted, and cut out, exposing parts of the body either as erogenous zones or points of vulnerability. These students’ futures are hanging in the balance, both in terms of job prospects and greater social and environmental issues. Each of the collections featured loose threads (many strung with beads). There was no sense, though, that the students were at loose ends. Their artistic statements suggested that many of them are looking for answers in their personal histories rather than from outside sources, though this doesn’t mean that there weren’t the occasional nods to designers like Viktor & Rolf and the ever-inspiring Rei Kawakubo.

Sustainability, set to be a major talking point of Spring 2020—and beyond—was the push behind Sho Konishi’s collection, “Garden of Eden.” His eco-apocalypse warriors were dressed in plastic garments that contained seeds, plants, feathers, dried flowers, and other natural elements. One jacket featured the recycling symbol in case you missed the point. Meredith Bullen wasn’t on a soapbox; she gave denim some witty remakes via trompe l’oeil stylings and many, many crystals.

Leigh Bowery and Deee-Lite’s DJ Dmitry came to mind during the presentation of Tara Al Wali’s Tara Babylon show, which addressed gender fluidity via incredible craftwork. Meg Calloway fused tailoring with complex and cobwebby knits. Perfect Imperfection was the title of Nong Guo’s collection—which had some fantastic devoré velvets—but it really describes the aesthetic all the students were after, whether they were collaging and twisting pieces together (Natalie Vladimiroff) or aiming for lightness with airy fabrics and a sense of humor (Evian Lee).

This slightly off, cobbled-together aesthetic is one that we’ll probably be seeing a lot of as designers, student and “pro,” address sustainability through upcycling and repurposing. What was most inspiring about the students’ work was that it was taking cut-and-paste culture in a new direction, one that addresses not only conservation of resources but, importantly, craft. These students’ work was tactile and textural. They had a sense of “hand” and a connection to the material world that is unexpected and encouraging in our digital age.

Camp

Costume Institute Benefit on May 6 with Co-Chairs Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles, Serena Williams, and Anna Wintour

The Costume Institute’s spring 2019 exhibition, Camp: Notes on Fashion (on view from May 9 through September 8, 2019, and preceded on May 6 by The Costume Institute Benefit), explores the origins of camp’s exuberant aesthetic and how the sensibility evolved from a place of marginality to become an important influence on mainstream culture. Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp’” provides the framework for the exhibition, which examines how fashion designers have used their métier as a vehicle to engage with camp in a myriad of compelling, humorous, and sometimes incongruous ways.

The exhibition is made possible by Gucci.

Additional support is provided by Condé Nast.

“Camp’s disruptive nature and subversion of modern aesthetic values has often been trivialized, but this exhibition reveals that it has had a profound influence on both high art and popular culture,” said Max Hollein, Director of The Met. “By tracing its evolution and highlighting its defining elements, the show embodies the ironic sensibilities of this audacious style, challenges conventional understandings of beauty and taste, and establishes the critical role that this important genre has played in the history of art and fashion.”

In celebration of the opening, The Costume Institute Benefit—also known as The Met Gala—takes place on Monday, May 6.  The evening’s co-chairs are Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles, Serena Williams, and Anna Wintour.  The event is The Costume Institute’s main source of annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and capital improvements.

“Fashion is the most overt and enduring conduit of the camp aesthetic,” said Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute. “Effectively illustrating Sontag’s ‘Notes on “Camp,”’ the exhibition advances creative and critical dialogue about the ongoing and ever-evolving impact of camp on fashion.”

Exhibition Overview
The exhibition features approximately 250 objects, including womenswear and menswear, as well as sculptures, paintings, and drawings dating from the 17th century to the present. The show’s opening section positions Versailles as a “camp Eden” and address the concept of se camper—“to posture boldly”—in the royal courts of Louis XIV and Louis XV.  It then focuses on the figure of the dandy as a “camp ideal” and traces camp’s origins to the queer subcultures of Europe and America in the late 19thand early 20th centuries.  In her essay, Sontag defined camp as an aesthetic and outlined its primary characteristics. The second section of the exhibition is devoted to how these elements—which include irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, and exaggeration—are expressed in fashion.

Designers whose work is on view in the exhibition include Virgil Abloh (for Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh); Giorgio Armani (for Armani Privé); Manish Arora; Ashish; Christopher Bailey (for Burberry); Cristóbal Balenciaga; Thom Browne; Sarah Burton (for Alexander McQueen); Jean-Charles de Castelbajac; Antonio del Castillo (for Lanvin-Castillo);  Dapper Dan (for Gucci); Christian Dior; Salvatore Ferragamo; John Galliano (for Maison Margiela, House of Dior, and John Galliano); Jean Paul Gaultier; Nicolas Ghesquière (for Louis Vuitton); Odile Gilbert (for Jean Paul Gaultier); Edda Gimnes and Manuel Vadillo (for EDDA); Molly Goddard; Bertrand Guyon (for House of Schiaparelli); Demna Gvasalia (for Balenciaga and VETEMENTS); Johnson Hartig (for Libertine); Deirdre Hawken; Pam Hogg; Marc Jacobs; Rossella Jardini (for House of Moschino); Stephen Jones (for Giles Deacon, John Galliano, and House of Schiaparelli); Christopher Kane; Patrick Kelly; Ada Kokosar; Christian Lacroix; Karl Lagerfeld (for House of Chanel and Chloé); Mary Katrantzou; Rei Kawakubo (for Comme des Garçons); Tomo Koizumi; Bob Mackie; Martin Margiela; Stella McCartney (for Chloé); Alexander McQueen (for Givenchy); Alessandro Michele (for Gucci); Edward Molyneux; Erdem Moralioglu (for Erdem); Franco Moschino; Thierry Mugler; Alejandro Goméz Palomo (for Palomo Spain); JiSun Park and KyuYong Shin (for Blindness); Marjan Pejoski; Phoebe Philo (for Céline); Paul Poiret; Gareth Pugh; Richard Quinn; Traver Rains and Richie Rich (for Heatherette); Zandra Rhodes; William Dill-Russell; Yves Saint Laurent; Elsa Schiaparelli; Jeremy Scott (for Moschino and Jeremy Scott); Hedi Slimane (for Saint Laurent); Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren (for Viktor & Rolf); Anna Sui; Jun Takahashi (for Undercover); Michael Travis; Philip Treacy; Giambattista Valli; Walter Van Beirendonck; Patric DiCaprio, Claire Sullivan, and Bryn Taubensee (for Vaquera); Gianni Versace; and Vivienne Westwood.
